The way this unique system works is quite simple and straightforward. The treatment is a fast, 15-minute procedure, and involves little more than a small balloon being easily inserted into your stomach via the esophagus. The balloon is inserted empty and then filled with saline solution once it is in the proper position.

What would this achieve? If you take a moment to envision the treatment, you see that a portion of your stomach is kept full by the balloon. This does two things, it allows you to feel fuller faster each time you eat or drink. The other thing this allows is for you to consume less (i.e. fewer calories and smaller amounts) each time you eat. This is the simplest way to optimal portion control simply because you just don’t have the space to overeat at any given time.

Additionally, the balloon slows the digestion process, ensuring that you feel fuller longer and yet have all of the energy you need. Once you have the treatment, the medical team also works with you throughout the following twelve months to ensure that you lose weight healthily and then also keep it off once the balloon is removed.

Out Austin patients who have received the ORBERA Balloon had found the following benefits from the treatment:

  • Average weight loss is about 15% over six months
  • Experience weight even after the balloon is removed (with proper diet and exercise)
  • Fast procedure
  • Helps conditions associated with obesity, such as diabetes and cardiovascular health
  • Improved blood sugar and lipid levels
  • Non-surgical

What to Expect on the Day of ORBERA Balloon

The ORBERA® balloon is not left in your stomach permanently. It remains in place for only six months and is then removed. Just as it was easy and convenient to have the balloon placed right in the medical office, removing it is the same. It takes less than 30 minutes from beginning to end. And once the balloon is removed, you will notice that your body has become attuned to eating less and feeling satisfied.

The entire process is overseen by our medical team and you will learn about healthier eating, a healthier lifestyle, and how to move forward when the balloon has been removed, even if you are still working on weight loss goals.

ORBERA Balloon Recovery

After your procedure, you may begin ingesting small amounts of clear liquid about 6 hours after the insertion of the ORBERA Balloon. You should continue a liquid diet for about a full week, after which you should move on to softer foods. After about 3 weeks, you should be able to return to normal solid food.

You should expect to have at least 3 days of inactivity immediately following your procedure. Depending on how your body adjusts to the balloon, you can return to your normal activities after about 5 days or so. If you have any questions or concerns with your recovery, please contact our office.

Is ORBERA Balloon painful?

Many patients do feel discomfort or mild pain during the first 48 hours of balloon insertion, this is due to the stomach wall being irritated by the foreign balloon. These feelings will subside and can be minimized with a liquid diet during the first few days of the procedure.

How long does ORBERA Balloon last?

The average use of the ORBERA Balloon is between 4-6 months. After the 6 month mark, the balloon has a higher probability of deflating which can cause bowel obstruction or other health problems, and in some more serious cases, death.

How long until I see results?

Like any form of weight loss, this procedure will take some time. You will be advised to keep the ORBERA Balloon in your stomach for no longer than 6 months. While the average patient loses about 15% of their total body fat or about 5 points from their BMI, some patients have lost up to 47% of their overall body fat.

Can I combine ORBERA Balloon with other procedures?

If you are interested in combining the ORBERA Balloon with other procedures, you may be advised to wait until the balloon has been removed. Depending on your final results, your plastic surgeon may suggest a Tummy Tuck if you have excess skin, or KYBELLA if you have stubborn fat still in your neck. Please discuss your goals with your plastic surgeon during your consultation for their expert recommendations.

What are the risks associated with ORBERA Balloon?

Although the risks of ORBERA Balloon are rare and typically only an issue if you don’t have it removed when your doctor recommends it, there are some potential side effects associated with the procedure, which can include but are not limited to:

  • Acid reflux
