Chemical Peels

Don’t we all desire skin that is brighter and blemish-free? A Personique Chemical Peel can assist in making this desire a reality. Also known to many as chemexfoliation or dermapeeling, a Chemical Peel technique is used to improve the appearance of the skin safely and effectively. This can take place in areas that you feel most needed to be rejuvenated, for most patients, this is in and around the facial area. In this treatment, a chemical solution is applied to the skin that causes it to exfoliate and eventually peel off, revealing newly exposed youthful skin. Our board-certified Austin plastic surgeons have perfected this restorative procedure, resulting in regenerated skin that is smoother and much less wrinkled than the old skin, leaving a more even color and brighter complexion. Read on to find out if a chemical peel is right for your skin.

Who are the Best Candidates for a CHEMICAL PEEL?

It should be noted that Chemical Peels can deliver long-lasting results for all different kinds of skin types and tones. We advise that they work best on fairer skin tones that contain thinner layers. Patients with freckles are not the best candidates for deep-level peels as they can produce unnatural-looking results. Those with deep-set wrinkles or skin with heavy sagging may not be a good candidate. People with dark skin tones may experience different results. Our highly trained and experienced plastic surgeons will determine if you are the best candidate for this process. Pregnant women or nursing mothers are also not good candidates for peels. As well as those with a history of skin disease or cold sore outbreaks.

If you’re interested in getting a chemical peel in Austin, the first step is to schedule a consultation. It’s very important to have realistic expectations about what the procedure can and can’t do for your appearance. Upon consultation, we follow a guided process that determines what treatment is required based on the patient’s needs and specific skin variety. Although the procedure of Chemical Peels follows a similar pattern in all cases, minor changes in technique can be implemented in specific situations. During your appointment, we’ll be able to answer questions and provide you with our expert recommendations to move past the first step.

During a peel, a chemical solution is applied to your face. A burning sensation may be experienced when the solution is applied but it should pass quickly as the chemical itself acts as a local anesthetic. Depending on the size of the area to be treated, it takes about an hour or longer and is done on an outpatient basis. Afterward, they may put a mask of adhesive tape over your face, which you’ll leave on for a day or two. When the peel is done primarily for skin blemishes or pigmentation problems, the tape may not be used.

Right away, within 24 hours of your chemical peel treatment, a crust or scab will form to protect the new skin. Sometimes this is removed through gentle washing with soap and water followed by the application of ointments, creams, or moisturizers. Your surgeon will give you specific instructions. Once the crust has fallen off, the new skin appears deep red. It’s similar to a bad sunburn. Gradually, your skin will lighten to a pinkish hue. When the new skin has been regenerated completely after several weeks, it will be a bit lighter in color than it was before your procedure. Light birthmarks or freckles often disappear. If you have heavy freckles, a line may appear between your chin and neck.

Abnormal sensations, such as itching and tingling, may be experienced as the skin heals. These sensations can be alleviated with cool compresses and appropriate medication. You should be up and around in a day or two after treatment but should refrain from strenuous activity for two to three weeks.

Since the procedure strips the skin of its protective layer of pigmentation, you should avoid direct sunlight completely for the first three weeks to avoid making your skin tone uneven. Afterward, when pigmentation returns, any sun exposure should be accompanied by sunblock.

It will be about three weeks before you can wear light makeup and feel comfortable in public. Most surgeons recommend non-allergenic makeup to avoid irritation to the new skin.
