Keeping male patients In mind…

WHAT IS MALE BREAST REDUCTION?

Gynecomastia surgery (Male Breast Reduction or reduction mammaplasty) helps reduces breast size in men while flattening and enhancing the chest contours. In certain, more severe cases of gynecomastia, the weight of excess breast tissue can cause the breasts to sag and stretch the areola. If this is the situation, the position and size of the areola can be surgically improved and excess skin may be reduced.

Many doctors characterize Gynecomastia by:

  • Excess localized fat
  • Excess glandular tissue development
  • Presence unilaterally (one breast) or bilaterally (both breasts)
  • Sometimes excess breast skin

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE DAY OF MALE BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY

When you come in for your Gynecomastia surgery, you will be administered anesthesia, either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia, that will make your surgery more comfortable. Once under anesthesia, your surgeon will often begin with certain Liposuction techniques. This will require the insertion of a cannula (a thin hollow tube) through several small incisions. This tube is then moved back and forth in a controlled manner to loosen any excess fat, which will then be removed from your body through vacuum suction.

If an excision technique is utilized, your surgeon will remove glandular breast tissue or excess skin. Excisions may also be necessary if the areola needs to be reduced or the nipple to be repositioned in a more natural male contour. Depending on your needs, your surgeon may perform both techniques to help you achieve the best results for your body type.

MALE BREAST REDUCTION RECOVERY

After your surgery, you will have dressings or bandages applied to the incision areas, followed by an elastic bandage or support garment to minimize swelling as well as support your new chest contour while it heals. The cannula may be left in temporarily to drain any excess blood or fluid that collects during your initial healing stage.

You will be provided with very important directions you will need to follow, including how to properly care for the surgical site and drains. The surgeon will prescribe you some temporary medication to help prevent infection as well as make your recovery a little more tolerable. You should be able to return to a light workout routine within a few weeks.
