Breast Augmentation Basics

Successful breast surgery results require heightened technical skill and artistry, precise clinical judgment, and clear communication between our Austin surgeons and patient. Personique’s plastic surgeons view breast augmentation as a collaborative process with your happiness as the ultimate goal.

As one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries, breast augmentation is an effective way to create a more aesthetically pleasing silhouette and enhance your overall appearance. Breast implants improve areas that include:

  • Underdeveloped breasts
  • Symmetry issues
  • Loss of volume
  • Slight sagging

Breast Implant Options

There are several things to consider when looking into Breast augmentation. Below are some of the many breast implant options.

Implant Filler

Most breast implants will have a silicone outer shell that is filled with either saline or a silicone gel, each with its strengths and weaknesses. For example, saline breast implants will tend to ripple, have the potential to leak, and can have a different feel to both the patient wearing them and the person touching them.

Silicone breast implants, on the other hand, are usually softer to the touch and tend to have a more natural feel. While all implants have the potential to ripple, silicone breast implants will ripple less. Silicone implants can also last longer since the new silicone gel filler is semi-solid, making the danger of breast implant rupture or leakage pretty much non-existent. There are also gummy bear breast implants which are silicone-based but are thicker so they can maintain the shape and offer additional firmness.

Fat transfer can also be used to create a natural breast tissue look using your fat cells to enhance your appearance.

Implant Covering

Breast implants have two types of coverings, textured and smooth. Textured implants can lead to significant rippling on the skin and can become very hard, whereas smooth implants will settle quicker and drop a little more, giving a more natural appearance of breast symmetry.

More and more plastic surgeons are moving away from textured implants as they have a higher chance of capsular contracture. This will be a part of your discussion with your plastic surgeon during your breast augmentation consultation.

Implant Shape

The two shapes that modern breast implants have are teardrop and round. Teardrop implants (also called anatomic) tend to rotate and have a textured covering, which leads to certain complications mentioned above.

Round implants can achieve the teardrop shape when partially placed under the pectoral muscle. As the muscle pushes on the upper 2/3s of the implant, with the lower third of the saline implant not affected by muscle bulges, eventually creates a teardrop profile.

Implant Insertion

There are five different options when choosing the place of entry for your breast implants:

  • Below the nipple
  • Around the inferior aspect of the areola
  • Below the breast
  • Through the armpit
  • Through the belly button (uncommon)

As with any surgical option, each technique will have pros and cons, but the armpit is often the most popular, as it gives the surgeon a better ability to create a natural resting position for the implant and provide the least visible scarring.

Implant Positioning

Positioning is very important when trying to achieve a certain breast implant profile. Implants can be placed above or below the pectoral muscle, with some being placed partly above chest muscles AND partly below.

Every patient will have different requirements, but having the implants below the chest muscle helps the silicone gel breast implants to stay softer and produce better mammogram results. Your plastic surgeon will help you choose the best option for you and your body type.

Cup Size

Selecting the cup size is widely considered to be the most enjoyable part for cosmetic surgery patients, but it is also a more difficult category to discuss because, unfortunately, there’s no solidarity in the cup-size community.

For example, a B could be a standard B at one store, but when you go to a neighboring store or order online, it could be an A or a C. This is one of the many reasons why we encourage our patients to focus more on the visual appearance of an implant size, rather than which letter is associated with it.

Who are the Best Candidates for BREAST AUGMENTATION?

Breast augmentation is an ideal way to regain confidence, create a more proportionate figure, restore a look of youthful femininity and enhance overall appearance and self-image. Women choose to undergo breast augmentation for a wide variety of different reasons.

Underdeveloped Breasts – Many of our breast augmentation patients come to us ready for a change after facing years of poor body image and embarrassment due to underdeveloped breasts. While it may seem petty to some people, Micromastia (the medical term for the postpubertal underdevelopment of a woman’s breast tissue) can have significant personal, psychological, and social impacts on a woman. Many women view their breasts as an essential component of their femininity and sexuality. For a flat-chested female, her small breasts can be a source of nagging dissatisfaction and low self-esteem. Individuals who are not completely happy with the size and shape of their breasts can benefit significantly from breast augmentation surgery.

Uneven Breasts – Just about every woman has some degree of asymmetry when it comes to breast size or position. Up to 25% of women have breasts that display visibly perceptible asymmetry, wherein breasts differ in size by at least one cup size. Women with overly pronounced disparity often find their breast asymmetry to be a source of anxiety, causing them to feel uncomfortable in certain clothing or their intimate relationships. Breast augmentation can help balance the appearance of a woman’s bust. There are essentially two options for correcting asymmetrical breasts. The patient may opt to have breast reduction performed on the larger breast to match the smaller breast or choose to augment the smaller breast using a breast implant.

Sagging or Deflated Breasts – Women who experience a slight sagging of the breasts or who have lost fullness in the top portion of the breast can also benefit from breast augmentation. Women with moderate or significant sagging will likely benefit more from a breast lift; however, breast lift surgery alone will not enhance volume or fill out the upper part of the breast. This is why many of our patients undergo a breast lift and breast augmentation procedures at the same time to optimize their results.

The first step to getting a breast augmentation in Austin is to book a consultation. During your personalized consultation, your physician will evaluate and discuss with you many different details to ensure an ideal aesthetic outcome for your unique frame. Your plastic surgeon will assess factors such as:

  • Your personal goals and desired size
  • Breast volume
  • Breast diameter
  • Chest wall asymmetries
  • Gummy vs silicone vs saline
  • Skin excess
  • Skin quality

Understanding the individual characteristics of each patient along with her unique set of goals is vital to achieving the desired outcome. Choosing a knowledgeable plastic surgeon for your breast augmentation surgery who takes the time to get to know you and understand your aesthetic goals can mean the difference between results that look artificial and those which provide soft, natural-looking contours.

What to Expect on the Day of Breast Augmentation

Your breast augmentation procedure will be performed at our private, outpatient surgical suite. Before surgery, the size and type of implant are chosen during your consultation based on your expectation and body frame. We understand that you may feel nervous about the breast enhancement procedure. This is only natural of course. However, it helps to know what to expect on the day of surgery and during your recovery period.

What to expect on the day of surgery:

  • When you arrive at our Austin plastic surgery clinic, you will be escorted to the pre-op area where our friendly and caring staff will quickly put you at ease.
  • Your surgeon will meet with you to answer any last-minute questions and mark incision locations with a surgical pen.
  • The anesthesia provider will administer a local anesthetic combined with sedation so that you will feel no discomfort during the procedure. You will then be moved into the OR.
  • The incision is made either above or below the breast muscle. The location of the incisions for breast augmentation can vary: it can be made in the armpits, or around the colored part (areola) of the nipples.
  • After the incision is made, the breast implant is inserted into a pocket, either under or over the pectoral muscle.
  • The method for inserting and positioning the breast implants will depend on the type of implant, the degree of enlargement desired your unique body type, and your surgeon’s recommendations.
  • Once the implants have been properly positioned, the incisions are closed and a compression garment is applied.

*Surgery time varies, between 1 and 3 hours. After your procedure is complete, you will ‘wake up from sedation in the recovery area where you will be monitored closely and cared for by our nursing staff.

You will typically be released to go home a few hours after surgery. At this point, our staff will call your designated family member or friend to pick you up. You will be sent home with post-op instructions and a special surgical bra designed to support the breasts as they heal.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

As with any surgical procedure, there will be somewhat of a recovery period involved after surgery. However, recovery is considered to be fairly mild in comparison to other cosmetic procedures like a facelift or a tummy tuck.

One of the most common questions that we get from our Austin, TX breast augmentation patients is, “When can I return to work?” or “what is the healing time after breast implants?” The answer to these questions will vary from patient to patient. The level of discomfort experienced during your recovery will depend on several factors. The incision type, implant size, and placement can all affect an individual patient’s experience during recovery. Of course, your pain tolerance will be a factor as well. Regarding returning to work, this will also depend on your job description. If you have a sedentary job, you will typically be able to return to work sooner than someone with a more labor-intensive job. Most patients with desk jobs will be able to return to work in a matter of a few days.

Below is a list of general guidelines for post-operative care during your breast augmentation recovery period.

  • Wear large, comfortable clothing after surgery
  • Discomfort is expected during the first few days after surgery. Pain medication is prescribed.
  • You will not be able to drive; ensure you have assistance during the first week or so after surgery.
  • Activity after breast augmentation should be limited.
  • Low-pace activity is encouraged, with frequent periods of resting. Keep hydrated.
  • No exercise for about 4 weeks after surgery. Consult with your surgeon before resuming normal activity.
  • Showering may be permitted 72 hours after surgery
Do not remove any of the dressing or bandages. This will be done by our nurse.
  • Avoid soaking in a bathtub for approximately two to three weeks.
  • Avoid heavy lifting.

Contact us at our Austin office immediately if you experience unusual drainage, fever, or discomfort that is not subsiding with medication. Remember, if you have any questions regarding recovery, or are worried about anything, you can contact your Austin medical team at Personiq

  • Surgeon fee
  • All follow-up visits

*The type of surgery and extent of the procedure may also influence the cost. There are several different methods for performing breast augmentation surgery, and some techniques are more time-intensive and technically demanding than others.

The type of implant used is another factor that will influence the cost of breast augmentation surgery. Silicone implants tend to cost slightly more than saline. There are several reasons for this discrepancy, including the cost of the material used to fill the implant. Both implant types have their own set of advantages and disadvantages and choosing the right implant for you as an individual will depend on your personal needs and specific body type. At your initial consultation, our surgeons will discuss your aesthetic goals and assess your body type to help you determine which breast implant option is best for you.

Is Breast Augmentation painful?

You will be administered anesthesia during your surgery, so you shouldn’t experience any pain or discomfort. There will be some pain and tenderness during the first two to three weeks around the incision area during your recovery. We will provide you with postoperative instructions, including incision care, to prevent complications that cause further discomfort.

How many appointments will I need?

While you should only require 1 appointment for the actual surgery, you will be asked to return 4 – 6 weeks later to see how you are healing, followed by 3 months later, then 6 months later, with the possibility of an additional check-up after that.

How long until I see results?

You will be able to see a change as soon in your breasts almost as soon as your surgery is finished, but in order to see the finalized results, it may take as long as three to four months. Your breast implants will need this time to settle into their proper position and for the swelling to subside.

Can I combine Breast Augmentation with other procedures?

Breast Augmentation can be combined with many different procedures to help you get the exact appearance of your dreams. Many of our Austin patients will utilize Liposuction or a Tummy Tuck to achieve the body type they are striving for. If you would like to enhance any part of your body, we encourage you to bring it up during your consultation so that we can make the best recommendations for you.

What are the risks associated with Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation does have some potential risks and side effects, such as:

  • Breast pain
  • Capsular contracture (Scar tissue that distorts the shape of the breast implant)
  • Changes in nipple and breast sensation
  • Implant position changes
  • Implant leakage or rupture
  • Infection

Correcting these complications might require more surgery, to either remove or replace the implants.
